Diagrams have permeated human civilization, providing visual tools for every conceivable endeavor, from mystical cosmologies to computer circuitry. They have also been crucial for successive art movements from Dada to Fluxus to Conceptual Art. Schema: World as Diagram examines the pervasive use of diagrams in postwar and contemporary art. For some artists, the diagram is primarily a spiritual instrument, for others it offers an alternative to the abstract/figurative binary. Diagrams are also a means of engaging with the external world, whether by visualizing networks of power or sketching new paths of communication.
