About a year after she immigrated to New York, her father took her to Jones Beach out on Long Island. the waves were large that day and crashed violently ashore as she tried to swim out past the breakers. Having had no prior experience with the ocean, she got pummeled by a big wave, then caught in a rip tide and pulled down and out into the swirl. This momentary loss of control has been an enduring childhood memory
