“What began as an avant-garde reaction to the contradictions of capitalist society in the after shock of World War I has become the visual idiom for all twentieth century culture. Montage- the aesthetic practice of separating and reassembling fragmented pictorial elements to create a new whole based on mechanical reproduction- has cut across every generation and every national boundary since the First World War, beginning in the 1920’s and continuing to the present day. Artists have used montage to configure, and call into question, the world in which we live.“
