Beginning from a foundation in fashion design during the 60s, Shea moved forward formally to the discipline of sculpture finding the technical and aesthetic roots of the practice of greater interest. Along with her first exhibition at the Clocktower (1976), she had numerous collaborations with Trisha Brown, the Eye and Ear Theater, Red Grooms and Elizabeth Murray. In retrospect, Shea has stated, “that highly disciplined study in fashion served me well as an essential training for building a figure. I used what I knew, and that was the unique underpinning to my work.” Along with an extensive photo essay of the current work, included here is the timeline of her oeuvre since 1976.
