Tokyo, San Francisco, New York, Paris, and Bern – all places that left marks on her oeuvre…with all the feelings of uncertainty, disquiet, and displacement that such a position triggers. And arriving in San Francisco in 1953, she worked despite the wounds of post-war history, geography, race and gender. Given the welcome she received from San Francisco’s Palace of Legion of Honor (1954), she was able to transcend these experiences of otherness and disjunctive modernity. Yokoi would embrace for decades to come her vision of nature and home through the larger historical backdrop of her life. Notably, Teruko Yokoi was one of the few women who worked alongside the New York Abstract Expressionists of the 1950s and 1960s.
