Opening May 1 at the Hollis Taggart Gallery, New York
Teruko Yokoi and the Noh Theater
We are pleased to share the exhibition Teruko Yokoi: Noh Theater in collaboration with the Hollis Taggart Gallery located at 521 West 26th Street. The exhibition has been made possible thorough the enthusiastic support for the Estate by Hollis Taggart and Severin Delfs, along with the cooperation of Tai Wallace of the Emerald Gallery with Teruko’s daughter, Kayo Malik and Kent Fine Art. Previewing on May 1st , the exhibition will feature over 20 works that reflect Yokoi’s unique fusion of Japanese haiku visual culture and her early introduction to the abstract expressionist movement thru Joan Mitchell, Kenzo Okada, Mark Rothko and Sam Francis. The show will also overlap the new venture entitled Teruko in the Hotel Chelsea embracing and memorializing Yokoi’s time as a Chelsea Hotel resident with Sam Francis in the late fifties. Her lifelong dedication to painting received its first institutional recognition with a show at the Kunsthalle, Basel in 1964, culminating in her last lifetime retrospective in 2020 at the Kunstmuseum in Bern.
