Laffoley based this painting on a passage from Revelation 4:7 which said “the first living creature like a lion, the second living creature like an ox, the third living creature with the face of a man, and the fourth living creature like an eagle in flight”. The eagle symbolized Sovereignty and Supremacy. Described as cherubim, their original duty was to guard the Garden of Eden, and later through the Book of Ezekiel and some Christian icons, they were depicted as having wings and became the protectors of God. Many forms of Judaism include a belief in the existence of angels as also expressed in the Kabbalah.
